Returning to school after serving in the military can be challenging for Veterans, many of whom are fresh off the battlefield. The shift to an academic environment can be tough, especially when balancing college classes with a civilian job and family life. Knowing what to expect and how to handle these life changes can help make the transition from military back to civilian life less stressful.
Since its inception in August 2010, San Francisco VA Health Care System’s (SFVHCS) Student Veterans Health Program (SVHP) at City College of San Francisco (CCSF), Ocean Campus, has provided support to over 1,400 Veteran students and enrolled over 500 of them into VA health care.
“We love being able to be right here for Veterans just when they are walking onto campus, at a crucial time when many are transitioning from military back to a new phase of their lives,” says SVHP Coordinator Bridget Leach, LCSW. “We offer valuable outreach services to Veterans including: social work services for Veterans who need community resources or referrals; information about VA health care benefits (including enrollment and appointment scheduling); supportive and evidence-based counseling, psychiatric services and medication management, smoking cessation, and a monthly speaker series that includes a presentation and free lunch for the Veterans.”
Who are the Veteran students being served by SVHP? “Nearly half of the student Veterans we assist have served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn,” says Bridget. “And 13 percent of the Veterans we serve are women.” Most Veteran students who enroll in VA health care through SVHP at CCSF are seen for medical appointments at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, San Bruno VA Clinic, or San Francisco Downtown VA Clinic, according to Bridget.
“One of the benefits about the model of our program versus traditional programs is that we’re coming to where the Veterans are and providing preventive services in that capacity,” says Bridget. “What’s ideal about our program is that we’re imbedded in the CCSF Veterans Benefits Office. The Veterans experience a ‘one-stop shop’ because they see us as they are setting up their VA educational benefits while enrolling for college, and right next door is the Veterans Lounge and Resource Center—a place where they can relax between classes and network with other Veteran students.”

“We are one of about 25 sites nationwide to host this model program, through the Veterans Integration To Academic Leadership (VITAL) program,” says SFVAHCS’ SVHP Program Director Keith Armstrong, LCSW. “Our program was initiated prior to the inception of VITAL, and our team helped to roll out the program nationally. Our team (consisting of 3 social workers, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a licensed marriage and family therapist and a health benefits advisor) looks forward to welcoming Veterans of all ages and experience, combat or not, and we’re glad to provide a sense of community and support.”
The SVHP outreach office is open Monday – Friday, located on the Ocean Campus of CCSF, 50 Phelan Street, Cloud Hall, third floor, room 333.
